Acupuncture for fertility

There are many factors which can have a negative impact on fertility, among them stress, hormonal imbalances and gynaecological disorders such as PCOS and endometriosis.

Many experimental studies show that acupuncture has substantial effects on reproductive function and  there has been a great deal of positive feedback from both men and women who have undergone acupuncture treatment for fertility.
Clinical research has been carried out into the effect of acupuncture in improving blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus, reduction of stress which disrupts hormonal balance, regulation of the menstrual cycle, triggering of ovulation where there is ovulatory disfunction, helping with conditions such as PCOS, pelvic inflammation, dysmenorrhoea and the improvement of sperm count, motility and other sperm abnormalities.

The results of a number of these studies are very promising and it is clear that more randomized, large scale clinical trials are called for in order to further evaluate these clinical effects.

Assisted fertility

Acupuncture when used alongside IVF doubles the chances of pregnancy - these results are from a study by Homerton University Hospital in London. 160 couples were divided into two groups. Pregnancy rates in the half receiving acupuncture were 46.2% against 21.7% in the half which did not. Stuart Lavery, consultant gynaecologist at Hammersmith Hospital said “There is a patient demand in the field of acupuncture . . . and this study is interesting in that it shows a statistically significant difference."

The use of acupuncture by women undergoing assisted fertility treatment has become popular over the past few years. Acupuncture is a safe supporting therapy for IVF, ICSI and IUI with no adverse effects.  Many people coming to the clinic have reported that they believe acupuncture, alongside their assisted fertility treatment, has made a difference and that it has also greatly helped them to relax and feel positive throughout what can be a very stressful time.

Clare Nasir talks about receiving acupuncture treatment while undergoing IVF in an interview with the British Acupuncture Council.
